16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Romans 8: 16, 17

Do you ever read something and realize you were really just looking at the words? Sure you read the whole page of a book, but you were really forming a grocery list in your head. And now you can remember your grocery list pretty well, but heck if you can remember any details from the page you just looked over. Let’s call this fakereading. Well, might I suggest that if you aren’t jumping up and down in expectant glee over verses 16 and 17, then you were fakereading.

Seriously, read them again and at least pretend like it’s completely true. Dd you realize what Paul is saying here? We co-heirs with Christ. We receive the blessings and promises–the benefits–of God as if we were his very children. Why, because we have become his very children! I’m sorry (not sorry) that I’m using so many exclamation points, but I want you to read these statements with emphasis. The Spirit that we’ve been reading so much about these last few days–he’s the one who testifies, who goes before the judge, and says, “That guy, right there, he is God’s son, and he is entitled to all the benefits of being God’s child.” The Spirit has argued it. Case closed.

Memory technique

Ok, I’m a little happier with today’s memory schtick. Check this out:

16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

“Stop the South Carolinians!” + “North Carolinians hate candy corn” + “Senators in Southern Georgia” = Romans 8:16, 17.
